Slice the baguette or ciabatta into slices about 2 cm thick. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Place the bread slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with olive oil and toast in the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until golden brown.
While the bread is toasting, wash the tomatoes and dice them finely. Place them in a bowl and add the salt, pepper, chopped basil, and a little olive oil. If desired, stir in a little balsamic vinegar.
Rub the toasted bread slices with the cut side of the halved garlic cloves to infuse them with flavor.
Spoon the tomato mixture onto the toasted bread slices and serve immediately. Garnish with additional fresh basil leaves, if desired.
