Rinse the glutinous rice thoroughly several times, then soak in cold water for at least 4-6 hours, or preferably overnight.
If using mung beans, soak them separately, drain, and cook until tender, about 20 minutes.
Drain the rice and place it in a steamer or bamboo steamer. Steam over medium heat for 30-40 minutes, or until the rice is cooked through and tender.
In a saucepan, combine the coconut milk, sugar, and salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved.
Transfer the steamed rice to a large bowl and gradually stir in the coconut milk mixture, allowing the rice to absorb the liquid evenly.
If using mung beans, mix them with the rice, or sprinkle on top before serving.
Garnish with toasted sesame seeds, peanuts, and freshly shredded coconut before serving.
Serve warm or at room temperature. It can also be served with fresh fruit.
